Our top 4 fitness apps
Want a personal trainer who offers encouragement and helps you track your fitness, but isn't going to cost a fortune?
Well, you can get all that in your pocket with fitness apps. To get you started, here are some of my favourites:
is a GPS-driven map of your health journey that allows you to plan exercise routes. It uses your exercise history to chart your progress and suggest your next fitness goal.
Motivation while exercising is given through spoken-word updates. It connects to Fitbit devices and MyFitnessPal tools to help with specific fitness motivations and healthy eating goals.
If you love walking, cycling or, of course, running, this could be an excellent app for you.
is a quirky mission-based interactive app that makes you forget the cardio and instead feel like you’re running (or power walking) for your life away from evil zombies!
The downside is it is a paid app and you may get odd looks from the neighbours as you run screaming down the road. But you may be having too much fun to care!
Zombies, Run! is a great app for the person who’d rather be entertained into exercise than exercise for entertainment.
acts as your personal cheer squad and connects you to other members for crowd sourced inspiration.
The app works like a game. You’re rewarded for improving results and completing over 900 weight-training, cardio, and general fitness exercises. You can compete for places on the leaderboard, or set your own personal quests. Plus, you can reach out to Fitocracy community members for advice and inspiration.
A drawback is that Fitocracy doesn’t allow you to integrate nutrition and healthy eating into your training. Also, it provides so much information that it can be a little overwhelming at times.
However, if you want to exercise with a supportive community, Fitocracy is well worth a look.
is a yoga training app that takes you from beginner to ‘yogi’. With over 280 poses to try as well as regularly updated videos to download to your iPhone or iPad, you can turn yoga into an any time, any day, anywhere experience.
One downside of Yoga Studio is it’s only available via the iOS App Store (so no Android™).
If you’re lacking the motivation to get out from underneath the doona this winter, why not give one of these apps a go? Who knows, a zombie or two might be just the encouragement you need.
