Puppies are very similar to children in that they’re inquisitive by nature, and love to get into mischief.
Just as we need to be aware of keeping a child safe from potential danger, we need to consider our puppy’s safety in and around the home.
Puppies and dogs are quite fond of many human foods, but some of what we eat is unsuitable for their systems. In fact, some things can make them sick or even kill them. Foods such as chocolate, sultanas, avocado, nuts and garlic and onions are all dangerous to your pet. Always secure all human food away from your puppy in order to keep them safe from harm.
Other dangerous things curious puppies may gnaw on can be found in the garden. Seemingly innocuous plants can be a grave danger to your pup. Plants such as azaleas and aloe vera can make your dog sick if they chew on it. Do some research into your garden to make sure there are no hidden nasties.
Also, many varieties of flower can upset your dog’s tummy. Gardenias, hibiscus and Birds of Paradise amongst others should all be kept away from dogs and if in a bouquet in the home, ensure they are up high and out of reach.
Another potential issue around the home is kids and pups. Although the two are made to go together thinking about both the pup and the children’s safety is important. Showing the children how to handle the new little family member is a good start.
Puppies and dogs can become excited by movement so ensure you keep close supervision during noisy or energetic play. Children also must learn to respect a sleeping or eating dog.
A puppy is a great joy, but also a big responsibility. They need you to look out for them, and they will, in turn, love you with all of their furry heart.
