How to groom your puppy

Grooming your dog is an essential part of taking care of them, but it is also a lovely time for you to bond.

Keeping your pet clean and free of excess hair will not only make them a nicer companion but also help to keep your home and clothes free from odours.
Regular brushing also helps to distribute the natural oils in your dog’s skin, which will help to give a lovely shiny coat. Brushing also gives you a great opportunity to check your dog for any unusual lumps or bumps that may need attention.
The first thing you need is a good brush that is appropriate for the hair length of your dog. Speak calmly, and brush gently and evenly, always brushing in the direction of the coat. Be particularly gentle with sensitive areas such as the stomach and the ears.
Take time to gently release any knots just as you would if you were brushing a child’s hair. Try to discourage any biting of the brush, however, sometimes dogs see this is a most excellent game. You could reward good behaviour with a treat to help ensure continued cooperation.
If things have gotten out of hand and your dog is particularly matted, you may want to consider a professional groomer to get things back under control.
Dogs shouldn’t require bathing too often, but if they are smelly or dirty nothing beats a lovely bath. Ensure you have a space large enough with a non-slip mat for everyone’s safety and use only special dog shampoo. Make sure the water is only lukewarm as you don’t want to scald your furry friend. Always you give your dog lots of love and praise during this process so they feel happy and secure.
A clean dog is much nicer to be around so put in the extra time and effort to ensure that your pooch is always putting his best paw forward.
