Tips to help beat the summer heat
Summer can evoke images of picturesque warm beaches, picnics in the park and balmy evenings. But unfortunately, it’s not always that romantic. Here are five tips to help you beat the summer heat.
1. Eat food that won’t make your body work too hard to digest
This includes light meals that combine lean protein, good fats, a lot of vegetables and a sufficient amount of wholegrain carbohydrates. Also drink plenty of water to help you stay hydrated!
2. Explore exercises that won’t make you overheat
When the mercury rises, it’s probably best to give those lunchtime runs along the river a miss, especially if it’s also humid. Instead why not give yoga or swimming a go, or try exercising during the cooler parts of the day - early morning, late afternoon and evenings.
3. Make your own ice-packs by filling a plastic bag with water and freezing it
Make the most out of household fans by standing in front of it with your ice-pack wrapped in a towel around your neck.
4. Wear 'cool' clothing

Pack away those skin tight jeans and woollen polo neck jumpers! Instead wear clothing that is light weight, breathable and loose fitting. Fabrics like cotton and linen are good options.
5. Wear Sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher
Skin cancer is extremely common in Australia, with 2 out of 3 people being diagnosed before the age of 70. Applying sunscreen alone won’t prevent skin cancer, so be sure to also wear protective clothing, sunglasses and hats, and seek shade whenever possible.
