Three habits for a healthy mind and body
Looking after yourself is important. Here are three tips to help you cope when the competing demands of life seem bigger than your ability to cope.
There are many things you can do to help maintain a healthy body and mind. In fact, there’s a connection between the two!
Here are three simple habits that may help you get through the more challenging times.
1. Move your body
If you have a ‘to-do list monster’ on your desk and exercise (or even standing up) is the last thing you feel you have time for, a circuit breaker may, in fact, be just what you need — moving regularly can help improve your energy levels, your mood, and even your sleep.
Try these tips to help you make it an ongoing priority.
- Schedule exercise into your calendar, just like other commitments – and stick to it.
- Exercise with a friend or colleague to help keep you motivated.
- Build activity in to your work day e.g. take the stairs instead of the lift; or enjoy a short walk outside on your break.
2. Think Mediterranean
If you want a more balanced, healthy diet, try going Mediterranean — and we don’t just mean eating your way through a holiday in Europe!
Research suggests people who follow a Mediterranean-style diet rich in vegetables, fruit, nuts, whole grains, and fish are less likely to experience symptoms of depression and anxiety.
You don’t have to change all your eating habits overnight! Start with gradual changes — for example, if you would like to increase the number of veggies you eat daily from zero to five, start by identifying a few different coloured ones and add one additional serve of veggies to your diet every few days.
3. Put yourself first sometimes
When life starts to seem a bit overwhelming, and you’re more likely to feel pressured, it’s okay to say ‘no’ if you need a little time out.
