Discover our favourite recipe for sausage rolls, with a little extra goodness and a little less naughtiness. They're perfect for kids' parties and will be loved by parents too!
Kids' parties are a time of great excitement. Everyone loves having their friends come to celebrate with them, and it’s a great excuse for some fabulous food. But traditionally, kids' parties have been laden with high-fat, high-sugar party foods.
Obviously, you still want the food to be fun and delicious. And the good news is you don’t need to spend hours in the kitchen, and hundreds of dollars to have healthier options. Just a few little tweaks can take old favorites to a new level of yummy goodness.
These sausage rolls combine two types of lean mince for flavor and have some sneaky vegetables stashed inside.
Serves: 25 depending on how big you make them
What you need:
- 250g turkey mince
- 250g pork mince
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- ½ zucchini, finely grated
- ½ carrot, finely grated
- 2 teaspoon fennel seeds
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- salt and pepper
- 3 sheets ready rolled puff pastry
- 1 egg yolk
- sesame and poppy seeds
- sauce to serve
What to do:
Preheat your oven to 200oC.
Place your fennel and mustard seeds in a dry fry pan over a medium heat and toast until lightly golden and fragrant. Pop into a mortar and pestle and give them a good bashing.
Lightly fry your onion until it is translucent.
Toss your minces, vegetables, onion and spices into a bowl and mix together thoroughly. Season well.
Cut your sheet of pastry into three equal slices length ways, and then again the other way creating nine equal squares.
Using a tablespoon to measure out your mixture, roll up your little sausage rolls until the mixture is finished.
Brush rolls with egg yolk and sprinkle with the seeds, before popping them into the oven until they are golden brown—about 20 minutes.
Serve warm or cold with the sauce of your choice, but tomato is always a family favorite!
